He's Growing Up!

Posted Jun 16 2008 6:12pm
It looks as though puberty has it's 'ups' as well as it's 'downs.'

A few weeks ago, I asked you toRUN....It's Puberty!I had been only seeing the bad side of ER's raging hormones, but as it turns out, there's a bright spot.....

He's bringing the groceries in the house! Not only that....he's putting them away and in the correct locations! This is totally of his own volition. I had nothing to do with it. One day, his brother stayed overnight at a friend's house -- this is something he rarely does. During that day and night, I saw a change in ER. It's as though he then donned the 'Man of the House' hat and took over responsibilities. This comes totally unexpected to meandmy son who said maybe he should leave more often. Agreed....and not necessarily because of ER. (Sssssh. Don't tell him I said that)

ER's choice in television programming has taken a turn, as well. Before, there was Caillou, Curious George and Dragon Tales. Now, it's Johnny Bravo, Kim Possible and the Antique Roadshow. Aaaah, that Kim Possible. He has had fits if his brother doesn't turn to the channel at least two minutes before its to air. ER has to be there sitting in front of the TV giving his full attention just as soon as she comes on. Although, it's a Daytime Emmy Award-winner, I'm still trying to find exactly what it is that has his attention. Is it Kim's hourglass shape and long hair? Or is it her wide eyes and pouty lips. Hmmmm....Hard to say. He gives his full attention to the 30 minute cartoon which is quite an accomplishment for a child with Autism.

With once was difficult, he is now mastering. Buckling his belt is an example. There is a pair of pants I bought for him that are a tad big around the waist. Since he hates to 'sag' (I wish his brothers would follow suit), I bought him a belt. Not paying any attention to the kind I bought (It has two metal pieces to put through two holes instead of the standard one), I've had to help him put it on. However, it didn't dawn on me until he came home from school yesterday that I didn't have to assist him. I raised up his shirt to see that I couldn't have done a better job myself.

Yup, it looks as though my little man is now abiggerman. And as much as I have wanted this to happen, there is just a tad bit of sadness knowing he is just that much closer to leaving the nest for good.
