Door Frames, Dark Dens and Sign Language

Posted May 04 2009 5:26pm
A couple of weeks ago we found out Twinkle will be going to the Special School we had put down for our first choice. I'm so happy. They are a school for Severe, Profound and Complex Needs and have special classrooms for ASD children. I was a little worried she wouldn't be able to start in September because of the school being oversubscribed. All i need to worry about now is what pretty school shoes I'm going to buy her!

Her mainstream Preschool have been really good with her lately. She does present as a challenge for them but they have responded very well to her. They have purchased a Dark Den (pic below) and she absolutely loves it!! So i have ordered one for at home. Her Special preschool have been very good too and they have reported that she has been trying to do some 'signing' in song time. Which i have noticed a little at home. They use Signalong as opposed to Makaton. I will be going on a Signalong Course in May but have the book already and have been practising. They use Signalong at the School she will be going to.

For a little while now Twinkle has been getting a little obsessed with door frames. She will sit for ages prodding the frame with her finger, a stick or even a banana (if I'm not quick enough). She is also paying particular interest in the shiny hinges and door handle, although when she becomes very distressed, as she does from time to time (actually quite often lately) she will bite the metal door handle out of frustration.

I hoping that the Dark Den will help her as at the moment she is getting very stressed and i feel it is due to her senses being overloaded. And hopefully it will be a dark quite place where she can retreat to.

Halo♥
