Controlling your emotions

Posted Dec 05 2010 9:28am

Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you. Luke 6: 27-28

I recently had an altercation with someone in front of a lot of people including my own child.  It was not a pleasant experience by any stretch of the imagination. At the moment of the altercation, I could not see beyond the next minute.  I did not consider for a moment how to control my emotions.  All I could think about was how to get through the event .

It is God who works in you to will and to act according to His good purpose. Phil. 2:13

Sometimes God know what you need and holds you in His arms even when you don't know it.  My pain of losing my father in law was really raw and made all the worse by what I perceived as heartless comments toward my child.  The fruit of the Spirit took over when I was completely unable to cope with the situation.  Literally, the Spirit took over my emotions and my response to it.  There is no other explanation for the self control that I exhibited that night.  It certainly was not my gut reaction to the event. God blessed me that night although it took many days of reflection to see it.  I had been immersed in the Word since the death in an effort to find some sort of peace.  When you turn to Christ in your time of need, He takes care of you.  Plain and simple.

"Although emotions are spontaneous , the actions they produce don't have to be."

In a recent Bible study that I did at church, The Disciples Personality by Avery Willis Jr.,  there is an entire week devoted to learning how to control your emotions. He gives you an action plan to learn how to Biblically handle your emotions instead of letting your emotions run your life.  It is not coincidence that I did this part of the Bible study before this event.  It is no coincidence that God had me do this study prior to my father in law's illness.  He always has a plan even if I don't know what it is at the time.

Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.  And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.   Phil. 4:6-7
