Clive visits Central Park Zoo, Time Square and more ...

Posted Aug 06 2010 2:53pm
Central Park Zoo was a revelation to us! I was allowed in! Now, in Dublin Zoo - Service Dogs are refused entry! Visiting the Zoo is one of Murray's favourite activities so you can imagine the upset every time the family go to Dublin Zoo (and I have to stay at home!). However, in Central Park Zoo I was not only allowed in ... but very warmly welcomed ....
I got to see the snow leopard up really 'close and personal' - Zoe is the snow leopard and the keeper who was there took lots of time to talk to Murray, explain about Zoe and then measured me to help explain to Murray about how I was about the same length as Zoe but about 1/3rd of her weight! She's 165lb and I'm only 25kg (58lb) ...
She paid no attention to me whatsoever and likewise I ignored her and moved the family on towards the polar bears ... if I was finding it hot I don't know how they must have been feeling ....
Murray loved being able to show all the animals to me and Murray also had his 'newest' toy to show all the animals - a pet alligator from Hilton Head, called appropriately enough 'Jane' - he wanted a constant reminder of Jane for the times when she wasn't around ... kids with autism love routine and certainty and continuity - so Jane the pet alligator at home here keeps 'Jane' in NY alive for Murray .... and yes, we also have a dolphin from Hilton Head named 'Petey' ...
Murray always loves sealions so he enjoyed watching them play in the water ...
Then we headed up towards Time Square .....
Now here is somewhere that a kid with autism could really find difficult - packed full of people, noise, hustle and bustle ... somewhere that Murray could certainly not have coped with a few years ago - but we walked through the place like a 'pair of pros' - no problem at all coping with the crowds and the sensory overload ....
In fact Murray was the first to spot the Toys-R-us ... he was on a mission to find some Spongebob Squarepants beanie toys and you know what, they had every toy you could ever hope to find .... except no Spongebob!

"Mom, how come they have no Spongebob here"
We carried on in search though ....
Headed towards M & M World ...
This was for Sorcha! She was in M & M heaven ... so many colours, so many varieties, so much choice ...
Hey, Mom - have you seen the amount of M&M's that Sorcha is buying ....
and yes, we eventually found a Spongebob beanie toy for Murray - Spongebob in a baseball outfit! He was happy so we were all happy! Another great day in NYC!
