Information: Exact statistics are hard to locate, but the often quoted number for the rate of divorce among parents with children with autism is around 80%.
Personal Story: I smiled to myself just now when I realized that a large number of the arguments that Tony and I have gotten in, in the past few years, have been related to autism. We don't argue very often, but the big ones have been about his asking me questions about what I am doing, usually it's a diet change or supplement and my feeling offended and telling him that he could get involved and figure it out himself! That has been at the core of a few of our arguments. We both go up and down at various times in our urgency for therapy. As a whole, I have been blessed to have him support and help in everything I do, I just have to undergo a little questioning now and then. ;)
The strain on couples is huge though. I would imagine especially if the child is severely affected and also if the couple is not in agreement on intervention choices. There can be such a hopelessness tied to autism and it often takes a lot of selflessness to make it through, for some, the strain is just too much. - Julee
