An Autism Mom's Professional Qualifications and Salary

Posted May 07 2009 9:10pm
Every once in awhile, there will be a news story calculating the market value for all the jobs a mom does, and assigning a "salary" based on what each job would pay. NBC Nightly News just did such a story, that you can read here, "What is a mom's work worth?"

The online version of this story has a nifty link to a site called mom.salary.com where you can use their calculator to come up with a personalized statement listing your services, hourly wage and the estimated annual income you would receive if paid for your work. (There is a Dad's calculator too!).

I took this little quiz and my estimated salary came out at $170,935. Wouldn't it be nice to receive that income?!

But looking at the list of jobs they created, there are a few things that are missing, and necessary, as job requirements for children with special needs. I was pleased to see some things they included, like nutritionist and logistics manager, but I think moms.salary.com should add specialneedsmoms.salary.com and add in the following jobs:

Occupational Therapist
Speech Therapist
ABA Therapist
Medical Researcher
Medical Assistant (specialty, neurology)
Medical Records Manager
Professional Carpet Cleaner
Special Education Teaching Assistant
Public Relations Manager

Those are just what I could think of off the top of my head! Do you have others you'd like to add? Leave a comment! Maybe I'll actually price out the list and come up with a salary, just for fun!

Cost for hourly speech therapy in a major metro area? $150 per hour. Hearing your child say "bbuu bbblll" for the first time while the therapist blows bubbles, even it your child is 5 years old? Priceless.

Happy Mother's Day everyone!
