Utah man wants to see original Aspen Grove trail reopened

For many people, September is the perfect month to hike Timp. Before the first snowfall and while the weather is cooler, Caine Alder likes to hike this popular trail. He begins in the Aspen Grove parking lot just up the road past Sundance Resort and follows a winding route past Emerald Lake to the summit of Mount Timpanogos but his path diverges from most everyone elses.
When I first starting hiking the Aspen Grove Trail it was different than the one now, Alder said. It was changed in the early 1970s but no one, including the Forest Service, seems to know why. The original trail put up by those first trail builders was superb. They really knew what they were doing. It was safe and maintained a consistent grade all the way up. I still use it despite the difficulty of moving the brush out of the way because it is just so much better.
Alder would like to see the Forest Service open up the old trail at least as an alternate trail to the summit, which would make the hike more enjoyable, safer and alleviate crowds on the often crowded trail.
