Things I have been Learning in the NICU

Posted Sep 14 2008 1:23pm

Just a little hodge-podge of fun things I'm learning:

I can do cbg's now! Okay, I didn't say my technique is perfect because you have to remember so many things at the same time but I'm feeling more comfortable with it and I've managed to become "mean" enough to make them bleed. Sob.

Little buddies don't whine like adult patients when you give them treatments or take blood or mess with them but they will get pissed off, turn funky colors, and drop their sats and heart rates. Hmm...impressive. Truly an impressive parlor trick.

Do you know why you need to wear gloves when admitting a sweet little innocent pure baby? Because they "still have their mama on them" which can be...um not so pure.

I've been an aunt/pseudo-grandmother for 16 years now. I have no problem cuddling and loving up on the little ones any time they cry even knowing I might be spoiling them for when they go home. Hey, it's what an aunt does. It's my job.

Did you know a 3 lb micro preemie has enough strength to pull out his own ng tube and kick your hand hard enough to send a capillary tube flying and that he has the audacity to then be mad because he's wet with the very blood he just knocked out of your hand? I didn't know that. Until last night.

Did you know that not all hateful secretaries work at the bank?

Did you know that there are some doctors who are absolutely charming, funny, and delightful to be around even when they're woken up at 3am to admit a new baby? That makes the job sooooooooo much nicer for everyone.

Have I told you lately that I love my job? No question about it. I do.
