New research findings from University of Newcastle, New South Wales, observed asthma patients after consuming low and high fat meals. Within hours of meals of high fat consumption patients were showing airway inflammation that was not present when they consumed low fat meals. Also the high fat meals seemed to constrain their response to Ventolin (albuterol).
Dr. Lisa Wood a fellow researcher stated in a media release that patients who consumed high fat meals had an increase in airway neutrophils and TLR4 and mRNA gene expression from sputum cells, which occurrences did not happen after low fat meals. The high fat meals reduced the asthmatic response to albuterol. Patients who consumed high fat meals, the post albuterol improvement in lung function took three;four hours was restrained.
Asthma cases have increased in westernized countries and experts imply environmental influences like diet and lifestyle could be a vital key, specifically since westernized diets contain more fat than traditional ones.
Past research has shown high fat diets stimulate the immune system which creates higher levels of inflammation markers in the blood. Researchers conclude this is the first study which examines how high fat meals may affect airway inflammation.
Sputum samples were taken from participants before and four hours after meals and then tested for markers of inflammation.

Participants who consumed high fat energy meals showed a significant increase in airway neutrophils and TLR4 and mRMA gene expression.
Participants that consumed high fat energy meals lower bronchodilator response opposed to those who had low fat, low energy meals.
Dr. Wood also stated the study was important for it was the first to show that high fat meals could produce this response.
The researchers acknowledge that further studies should be examined for the biology of how high fat meals can change the response to bronchodilator. Also, if medications that modify fat metabolism could restrain the negative effects on of high fat meals in the airways.
If additional studies affirm these findings then maybe we should advise people with asthma to reduce fats in their diets.

Regular aerobic classes strengthen the lungs so they do not have to work as hard among other health benefits that may decrease symptoms of asthma.
Herbal remedies which are still used today as the main asthma treatment in many countries. Some research has shown promising results. Further studies are still being conducted to see which works and are safe. A few of the herbs are Gingko extract, Butter bur and Choline. Blended herbs in Chinese medicine have shown some evidence that they are more effective than taking a single herb.
