Last night I was finishing my first round of therapy when I happened to look out the window of my patient’s room on the seventh floor. The only lights I could see were from the cars and streetlamps far below, with the odd window shining out of buildings in the distance. The flatness of the local terrain and the clarity of the night led to an astonishingly good view, and I stood silently for a moment to appreciate what I could see.
Suddenly, all across the horizon, fireworks shot up into the sky. It started small but then accelerated into a fireworks display rivaling any other I have seen. Dozens of towns and municipalities were launching their displays at the same time. Explosions of color burst out into the night. Stars and sunbursts and drifting lights lit up the night sky. For a few excellent minutes I stood and just watched the colors in the sky.
It was an excellent way to celebrate the fourth. Happy Independence Day, readers!
