“Where’s the kid’s mom?”

“I don’t know, she said she’d be right back…that was like an hour ago. Hey (kid), where’s your mom?”

The boy shrugged. He cradled a cell phone in his hands.

“Is that her cell phone?”

The boy nodded.

“Why do you have her cell phone?”

“She say…she gonna get some groceries an’ I can call her if anything happens.”

“Call her on her cell phone?”

The boy nodded.

“How are you going to call her if she left her cell phone here?”

The boy shrugged.

I don’t know about you all, but if my nine year old was in the ER with a long bone fracture, I would not just sign the consent to treat and skip out to get “groceries.” I certainly would not leave my nine year old kid incommunicado in the ER surrounded by strangers who are going to do painful things to him. Just like 99% of the parents I see around here, I would not leave my child’s side. But then, I’m a halfway decent human being just like most people are, while this child’s mother is apparently a useless sociopathic pile of crap.

I hope she gets a bad batch of “groceries” and dies of an overdose. He’d be better off without her.
