CareFirst Blue Cross Blue Shield is now the 1st major plan to cover exhaled nitric oxide (eNO) measurement in the diagnosis and treatment of asthma under CPT® code 95012.
Based on strong physician demand for eNO (exhaled nitric oxide), the medical directors of the CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield determined that the published, peer-reviewed evidence is sufficient to support benefit coverage of exhaled nitric oxide measurement for the diagnosis and treatment of asthma. A new Medical Policy has been developed and is being implemented for claims for CPT code 95012 filed after June 1, 2009.
CareFirst is the largest health care insurer in the Mid-Atlantic region, serving nearly 3.4 million members in Maryland, District of Columbia and portions of Virginia. This is an important milestone that demonstrates the recognition of exhaled nitric oxide in asthma care and management.
At Apieron, we are leading efforts to drive favorable coverage policies for exhaled nitric oxide on both national and regional levels. We look forward to bringing similar successes to your area and to ensuring that you and your patients can continue to benefit from the newest advancements in asthma care.
