Bad Decisions:

Posted Apr 10 2010 12:00am

He was young, in the prime of his life. Married with three cute children. Working his way through a college degree. Working to better himself.

But somewhere deep in his brain, he still wanted to be Cool.

And so it was that he found himself on the wrong end of a gun in an unsavory neighborhood, trying to talk his way out of trouble with some dangerous characters who he found himself suddenly indebted to. His negotiating skills proved unsuitable…and the man with the gun pulled the trigger and pumped a round into his stomach.

The young man found his way to our ER. Hours and hours of surgery went by. He came to our ICU. He got sicker and sicker…ARDS, systemic sepsis, dead gut, renal failure. We put him on the oscillator, on dialysis, on vasopressors, on antibiotics.

His wife and children came and saw him. They cried and screamed and hoped he would get better.

He didn’t. He coded several times and died.

Bad decisions can have lifelong consequences.
