"Ultra" means far beyond the norm. Most people, even runners, agree ultra-marathoners are "beyond the norm." But most runners would be surprised to learn that an ultra-marathon is not reserved for the elite (or the mentally insane). Just like every other race, ultra-marathons are filled with average, everyday runners - people just like you.

Fire Rages Through Ultra Marathon

This is a heads up to the ultra community. Two women are in critical condition after competing in an ultra marathon last weekend that was engulfed by a raging out-of-control brush fire. The race was in a remote location in northwest Australia. It took 5 hours for rescue workers to reach them. Both suffered burns to 80% of their bodies

Dean Karnazes’ movie UltraMarathon Man: 50 Marathons • 50 States • 50 Days was released today to a limited number of theaters. The title of the movie is pretty self explanatory. You can read more about it here.
Unfortunately for me, the initial release does not mention any theaters in my local area.

Now that my latest marathon is complete and the Shamrock Shuffle is over, I’m looking for a new challenge. Yes, I plan to do the Chicago marathon in the fall but I was thinking of something a bit bigger.

competed in a 544 mile ultra marathon. But, not only did he complete, he WON. And, not only did he win, but he ran in overalls and boots! Maybe running without his dentures was his secret to success. Great job, Cliff!

Frozen Otter Ultra Marathon – What is it like?

On Saturday, I did the Frozen Otter Ultra Marathon. It was a fun 32+ mile path run in the cold and snow. I joggled about 40% of it and ran about that much too.
The first 7 miles took just under 2 hours. The next 9 miles took 2.5 hours. On the way back, I got lost which added about 20 minutes to my time. The final 7 miles took me 2 hours

Three Taiwanese ultra-marathon runners were reportedly drugged with Rohypnol while running through Iran.
Kevin Lin Yi-chieh, Bai Bin and Chen Jun were hospitalized but will recover. The runners were participating in a 6,200-mile race through six countries. “Running for the Silk Road” began in April in Turkey and will end in China in September

Within the first 2 miles of the third lap, I thought I’d passed the girl in green. Her biking friends were stopped at a bathroom and I just assumed she was in there. But Kikta pointed her out up ahead. Damn, she’s good.
