Big news in the myeloma world on Friday! Thalidomide was approved by the FDA for treatment of multiple myeloma. Thalidomide is an old drug with a dark past. Thalidomide was introduced in 1956 by Chemie Grunenthal, a West German pharmaceutical company. In Europe in the early 1960s, thalidomide was prescribed for insomnia for adults and to pregnant women

Angiodysplasias are the cause of GI bleeding in 3–6% of all patients and a common cause of beeeding in the elderly. Thalidomide uas been reproted in a number of case reports qnd case series to reduce the angiodysplasias and GI bleeding. However no prospective studies have been done. As I said, thalidomide gave Richard an almost three year remission. Many of the posts on the MMA mailing list or ACOR mailing list are very critical of thalidomide. Richard has numbness in his fingers and feet that likely will be permanent. He had ongoing problems with constipation and he feels that his thinking was fuzzy while he took thalidomideRead on »

There are a number of studies suggesting that thalidomide with or without prednisone can ameliorate cytopenias of myelofibrosis with or withotu myelod metaplasia, although..., hydroxyurea, and splenectomy. Single agent thalidomide has been associated with significant palliative effects in patients with myeloid metaplasia including improvement in blood counts

refer patients to Little Rock, you are put on some sort of "oral" chemotherapy in the interim before SCT. ( Stem Cell Transplant )
