The first time I really took an interest in wasabi I was 23 and in Tokyo for the first (and sadly to date only) time. My days mostly consisted of wandering around the city’s various interesting neighborhoods, snapping photos and observing. Most of my afternoons were filled with blind exploration, but I did do the occasional “touristy” ac ...

One recipe I got from a magazine that I cook a lot is this one from the September 2004 Bon Appetite from Michael Shrader. It is more like a ceviche than a tartare but it is good! I love the interplay of the flavors and textures; a little spice, a little tang, the clean fresh taste of the cilantro, the creaminess of the avocado with the crunch of ...

My friend Jillian and I are pretty adventurous when it comes to trying new foods. A little too adventurous for some people’s taste, as we’ve gotten a few “are you crazy?” looks in the past few days as we’ve rattled off our foodie bucket list. Fugu (blowfish), for example, with it’s potentially-lethal-if-not-prepared-correctly toxin is high on ...

Jillian, myself and her friend Ryan headed into San F ...

So in a continuation from my previous post about the chickpea “Cajun” patties, here is the tartar sauce I used:
Quick Vegan Tartar Sauce
Ingredients:
2 tbsp Veganaise
1 tsp dijon mustard
1/2 tbsp sweet relish or 1/2 tbsp dill relish plus a touch of agave
1 tbsp lime or lemon juice (depending on what citrus you used in ...

A healthy lifestyle always involves fish, fish and more fish. Now I can eat sushi and shellfish all day long because the tastes are so fresh and they always come with some kind of delicious dipping sauce like melted butter, soy sauce or my favorite spicy mayonnaise, but fishy fish is something that I had to train my palate to like. Not anymore.

Enjoying a cooling dinner after a long day in the sunshine is pure bliss.
Having a fear of heights while climbing a wall is the exact opposite. Kind of a deal breaker, actually.
Although I did get higher with each climb, set goals and pushed my personal limit, I think it’s fair to say that I was not made out to be a mountain climber.

Many of you probably saw this photo on Lynn’s Weigh on Facebook: pickled herring at a salad bar. Only in Minnesota. And apparently Wisconsin. And maybe even North Dakota, but that hasn’t been verified yet.
I love herring. Grew up eating it out of the jar, same way I slugged orange juice from the container with the fridge door open. Of cour ...

My second shipment of Copper River Salmon arrived last week and let me just say – I wish salmon season was year-round. I’m not sure that I’ve ever had salmon so fresh and so delicious.
Even though I’ve always wanted to make a fish tartare – I’ve always been a little apprehensive. Partly because my Food Microbiology Professor fri ...

A couple of weeks ago, my cousin, Colleen, made salmon patties for her family for dinner and let me blog them. They were so inviting in the photo I suddenly had a craving. Fish patties is one of those things that are quick, easy, and tasty, but I usually I forget to make them unless something reminds me.
Thanks, Colleen!
