Can you get a negative pregnancy test when you have had no period?

This is the question that has been going around and around in my head over the last few days. Two more days until we can do the pregnancy test, and I have, somewhat naively, been hoping that no period = pregnant. But looking on blogs and other forums yesterday morning, it seems it can happen as it can take a few days for the period to come through
