If you haven’t already heard, California is in the midst of a major outbreak of pertussis (whooping cough). The California Department of Public Health is predicting that this could be the biggest outbreak in 50 years.

About a week ago I presented some data about the pertussis (whooping cough) outbreak in California and the US as a whole and suggested that the overall picture for the country was mixed. Media outlets had been calling this the worst outbreak in 50 years but the number of cases for the country as a whole and for the majority of states were down

As I talked about a few weeks back , California has been experiencing an outbreak of whooping cough (pertussis) over the past two or three months. For a while there were a lot of articles and blog posts about how this outbreak was the fault of the "anti-vaxers" but fortunately these articles have mostly died down.

A single test for more than 600 deadly viruses is being developed by a group of Defra -funded scientists, offering the possibility of spotting a disease outbreak in hours... and resources in the event of an outbreak It will also help to quickly identify when a virus has jumped from one species to another and when new strains of existing disease emerge

Alert: Outbreaks of Pertussis/Whooping Cough now declared an epidemic. News today reported outbreak reaching 1,132 cases of Whooping Cough in Washington State. CDC reports incidence is now 10x higher this year than last year. In 2011, California saw the most cases 9.143 cases in the US and reported 10 infant deaths. Another infant died yesterday. ...

There is an outbreak of Pertussis in California. Those dying are infants under 3 months because they are not old enough to be successfully immunized through vaccination... a pertussis outbreak is occurring or living in a community in which a pertussis outbreak is occurring . [emphasis added]
