Running or Racing? by the rockstar People's HealthBlogger Award Nominee On Halloween, my 13 year old daughter's XC season ended. It was a successful season for her and you can best figure that out since she has been talking about continuing running. Her team doesn't practice anymore and there were some local events (road and XC) I thought she was considering. I came home from work one night a few days ago and this conv ... Read on »
Running Versus Racing by Matt M. Patient Expert A reader sent me this interesting link a while back. It shows that there is an optimal running speed for endurance running - a pace that has the lowest energy expenditure. For the males tested, it turned out to be around 7 and a half minute miles, though there was variation due to body size and limb length. The study really showed that there is a ... Read on »
Last run before the race by Allen Patient ExpertHealth Maven I ran a comfortable two miles this morning. I just let my body dictate the pace. My average pace for the first mile was 11:10, and my average pace for the second mile was 10:15. I don't know if I'll have the endurance to keep a 10:15 pace for the whole race, but if I did I'd finish in 2 hours and 14 minutes. That would be a miracle! Tomorrow, my w ... Read on »

Should You Walk During a Running Race? by Perry R. Patient ExpertHealth Maven Prior to 2003, my marathon training was minimal. In fact, my longest run before ever doing a full marathon was 13.1 miles. This allowed me lots of free time but also limited my marathon times to ~4:00. Then I decided to train hard to see if I could break the world record [...] Read on »
Thur Run and Sat Race by BaddApple .. Patient Expert I did my second big run of the week. This was another heart rate monitor. This workout was just two Zones, but the were higher heart rate speed and for a longer time 48 minutes. It wasn't really an issue until I got to about the 30 min mark. I had problems bringing my heart rate down into Zone 1. I should have slowed my pace, but I didn't. This is ... Read on »
Sunday Race Pace Run by Glenn Jones I finished week two of my Half Marathon plan yesterday by doing a little four mile run. The plan was four miles at race pace. I ran at a pace that was comfortable for me. Turns out it was probably a little fast - definitely not a pace I could keep for a half. Final statistics - 9:43 average pace at a heart rate of 148 (84% MHR ). For the week, I pu ... Read on »
