period of time (no pun intended), young girls went from learning about menstruation and attending to their menstruation needs along side their mothers to learning about... and children about menstruation in the United States. This is really relevant because menstruation is one of the first parts of teaching young women about sex and sexuality

Previous research has suggested a possible increased risk of breast cancer in women who started menstruating early. They believe the greater lifetime exposure to estrogen could be related to an increased risk for breast cancer. Another study has reported an increased risk of adult onset diabetes in women who started menstruating early.

Better to quit after ovulation, study finds.
Women stand a better chance of successfully quitting smoking if they stop during the later phase of their monthly menstrual cycle, according to new research conducted at the University of Minnesota and published in the May 2008 edition of the journal Addiction .
