My own side comment: even though my facility does not use this type of fetal monitor, these "problems" are an every day occurrence. Our monitors half/double/pick up..., feel and listen!

Before sharing the great news of our new fetal heart monitor, we wanted to show you what the midwives have been using here at Nata clinic. They use a cone shaped device to put on the mothers stomache and then listen to the heart rate.Sr. Nurse Gaokwale is pictured above showing you how it works. September 7, 2009 — Fetal monitors made by Philips Healthcare, Avalon Models FM20, FM30, FM40, and FM50 and ultrasound transducer, may produce inaccurate readings....
The device manufacturer recommends that users can reduce risks by confirming fetal life before using the monitor and also by using an obstetric stethoscope, Doppler, and ultrasound

I love this article in the Philadelphia Enquirer Test Leads to Needles Cesareans .
Fetal heart-rate monitoring is a screening test. Good tests get several things right... cells brushed from the cervix – where the vagina opens into the uterus – doctors catch precancerous changes – or even early cancer – when it is easy to treat.

in lieu of receiving gifts. Sue even had a Vegas syle fundraiser to go along with it. The monitor cost U.S.$1,100.00 or (P6556.00). As you can see, this beautiful monitor... requested this monitor and Sue, Tony and their friends who made it happen. We ordered it with the help of Panado at Orthosurge in Gaborone and they in turn sent off to Pretoria
