The opiate of the masses feels pretty good.
According to one study, being religious may be helpful in fighting panic. To wit: "Importance of religion was a predictor of...symptom improvement at 1 year... This study suggests that one mechanism by which high importance of religion reduces psychiatric symptoms is through reducing perceived stress."

Great article in the NY Times reviewing reseach regarding the possible benefits of being administered morphine or other opiates promptly after a traumatic event... treatment with morphine cut in half the chances that troops would develop symptoms of post-traumatic stress later on.
