A friend was recently talking about the Hanson marathon training program to me. She is starting to train for her 9th Boston (18th marathon!) and is considering the Hanson program. It'll be her first time following this training plan. Have you used this program? I understand the concept of limiting the long run distance and running on tired legs

There are essentially as many marathon training programs as there are marathon runners (or aspiring marathon runners!). Everyone will have their own unique way... for over 40 years. The Hal Higdon Marathon Training Program takes 18 weeks and there are a number of program variants for novices, intermediate runners and advanced runners

Week six was a week of comparitive rest, the second step-back week in the training schedule. Every third week provides a little recovery to prepare for two more weeks of increasing mileage. Week 9 of the 18 week schedule represents the half-way point in this training program.

After a significant increase in intensity in Week 7, Week 8 represented very little change. The midweek 4-8-4 and Saturday 8 were identical to Week 7, except that the Saturday 8-miler was at a pace of runner's choosing, instead of at marathon pace. The only mileage difference was the Sunday long run increasing from 16 to 17 miles
