Abuse of Power by John V. Patient Expert Posted Mon 12 Dec 2011 11:58am Recently a karate school owner told me he picked up an entire family of students courtesy of abuse attributed to their former instructor. Apparently the young boy spilled water on the deck and was summarily back fisted in the chest by the burly sensei. Great marketing ploy. One wonders if this genius has a good attorney to counter these episodes. ... Read on »
A Busy Weekend by Kathy S. Patient Expert Posted Wed 01 Oct 2008 10:37pm Our nephew and his wife and children decided they'd like to stop by on Sunday and were kind enough to call on Saturday and confirm that we'd be around. I told them that we'd be out in the morning supervising security at the annual kindergarten bazaar until at least 2 p.m. and that S would be gone all day, administering the autumn Standardized Tes ... What’s your origin story? by Steve Z. Healthy Living ProfessionalFacebook Posted Wed 01 Aug 2012 3:00pm A passing comment by a friend on Facebook reminded me of how I found BJJ.  I’m a superhero fan and have been for as long as I can remember.  I read comic books, watched the cartoons and loved the Christopher Reeves Superman movies almost as much as I loved Star Wars.  All of this means two things:  first, I microwaved spiders when I was littl ... Enchilada pie, oh my by Offwhiteliving Posted Thu 13 Oct 2011 10:42pm Let me paint a picture for you.  Last night I was working out with the UC Davis Judo club until 10:30pm.  This was after the day that would not end, except for a 1 hour reprieve with my friend D. at the bar of Bistro 33 before Judo (yes, I think a glass of wine helped me be very limber as some 20 yr old practice chokes on me!). So y ... Read on »
Karate Grading – 1st Kyu by Lesley H. Facebook Posted Sat 19 May 2012 6:51am Today Tineladia and I went to test for our First Kyu belt in Karate. The test was shorter than normal, but intense.  We both passed. I got a first class pass, and an invitation to grade for my black belt in November. Tineladia still has a broken toe, which threw off some of their movement. They were given a second class, but told that they sho ... Read on »

Is your club up for the challenge? Raising money for Cancer Research by Sue Wharton Posted Tue 18 May 2010 12:00am I'd like to introduce you to a friend of mine - Peter Seth. Peter is a 4th Dan in Aikido and runs the University of Sunderland Aikido club. Peter is also the person who organises the The Great Northern International Festival of Martial Arts, which is the festival that I have recently reported on in a blog post . He has organised this festival fo ... Read on »
Why do we.........say 'Osu!'? by Sue Wharton Posted Thu 21 Jan 2010 12:00am Do you 'Osu!' in your dojo? Generally speaking, we do not 'Osu!' in ours except for one of our experienced black belts who regularly osus! I find it quite alarming (and intriguing) to hear him shout 'Osu!' up to 10 or 15 times a session. He osus when he bows announces a kata, starts a technique or whenever the instructor asks or tells him ... Read on »
Tweeting Towards 2016* by Angel .. Patient Expert Posted Wed 29 Jul 2009 10:26pm Up WAY too early, we headed to Disney's Coronado Springs Resort for the 2009 USA Judo Junior Olympic National Championships. JudoQueen has been hyped and stressed to the max over this, so Boyfriend was along for moral support. Her Sensei got his Coaching Credentials (a must at tournaments at this level) so we were good to go. Twitter kept my ner ... Read on »
The Black Belt Paradox by Sue Wharton Posted Sat 18 Dec 2010 12:00am A couple of weeks ago I received a comment to one of my posts in which the commentator SCB said: "I hear "time in grade" references; I hear "syllabus" and other such things that cause me concern as to what black belt means so would like to see you post on that subject, "What black belt means to me?"". I think that the subtext behind t ... Read on »
