Figuring out your maximum heartrate used to be simple: 220-AGE.
That's what I was taught in school. That's what most people, if you ask, will tell you.
Of course it wasn't exactly right either and there's an interesting history behind maximum heartrate.

The Framingham Heart Study reported that men with a resting heartrate above 92 beats per minute have an increased risk for heart disease. Recent research published in the British Medical Journal shows similar risk for heart disease in women. to the elliptical on it's own and kept track of my heartrate and calorie burn.
Calorie burn seemed about the same as it normally is with me just holding on to the handles for it to catch my heartrate.
I wore it while sitting on the couch and it seemed like my heartrate was all over the place.
Wore it to a Zumba class, and it told me I burn 112 calories

Bradycardia is a common cardiac arhythmia. Sinus bradycardia is often considered an arrhythmia from a disciplined heart. It denotes high vagal tone . Just got myself a heartrate watch to help me exercise more. To effectively exercise you have to get your heartrate up to 65 to 80% of your max heartrate. Maximum heartrate is 220 - your age.

If your resting heartrate is greater than 70, check with your doctor to see if your thyroid is overactive, you are anemic, or you have an infection, hidden tumor, a weak heart or other cause of a rapid heartrate. Having a resting heartrate greater than 70 increases your chances of suffering a heart attack. Journal reference
