May is officially Better Speech and Hearing Month. Here's some interesting Hearing Loss facts that Cochlear sent out to it's community members:
1 out of 10 Americans have... with hearing loss who are identified and receive early intervention prior to 6 months of age develop significantly better language ability than children identified after 6 months

May 1 is also the beginning of Better Speech and Hearing Month, according to an audiologist who wrote a letter in April to the newspaper columnist

Hearing speeches through the cochlear implant after a month do sound a little strange if not practice speeches with anyone. A little confidence do go a long way. speech in yesterday's New York Times (2/9/10). However, she placed little emphasis on hearing which is of prime importance for normal speech. 1-2 babies/1000 have some hearing loss... sounds by three months, hearing should be checked in an accredited pediatric hearing center. Hearing tested in a family doctor or pediatrician's office is not satisfactory

The goal of the Hamilton Relay Scholarship is to support individuals who are deaf, hard of hearing or speech disabled in their post secondary education... be a person who is deaf, hard of hearing or speech disabled.
