thought the cause of his pain was a back injury, doctors isolated the problem as Guillain-Barre syndrome, an autoimmune disease that attacks the nervous system.

It's been brought to my attention (and thus occurred to me ;) that I probably haven't explained Guillain Barre Syndrome or GBS very well. That is, what it is, and where.... These sensations can quickly spread, eventually paralyzing your whole body.
