Fistula - Articles

It's a boil! It's a wound! No! It's a fistula, man! by Kamal S. Patient ExpertHealth Maven Posted Sun 24 Aug 2008 2:57pm I have a fistula in my left upper arm. I have so many people staring at it that I get a little uncomfortable at times. Now, fistulae generally are a little gross to see. Mine has the arterial vein dilated like crazy. That makes it even worse. Generally, my shirt or T shirt sleeve covers it but when a small part of it is visible ... Read on »
Anal Abscesses/Fistulae by Dr. Anshu Gupta Patient Expert Posted Tue 02 Jun 2009 4:40pm 1 Comment An abscess results from an acute infection of a small gland just inside the anus, when bacteria or foreign matter enters the tissue through the gland. Certain conditions - colitis or other inflammation of the intestine, for example - can sometimes make these infections more likely. After an abscess has been drained, a tunnel may persis ... State of the fistula by Kamal S. Patient ExpertHealth Maven Posted Sun 13 Sep 2009 10:02pm I was visited by a team from Fresenius recently. They are planning to start home hemo training in India and wanted to see my setup. When they came, we discussed my treatment and they saw my fistula. They were quite alarmed. They said I should have it checked right away. They thought it was very risky to have such a huge fistula and it could rupture ... Read on »
Fistula pain by Kamal S. Patient ExpertHealth Maven Posted Mon 29 Nov 2010 5:42am For the last couple of days I have been having some pain in the venous site of my AV Fistula. I changed the location of the cannulation. I am actually at Care Hospital, waiting outside Dr. P. C. Gupta's OP room for my turn. Dr. P. C. Gupta is a vascular surgeon. I suspect that there is an infection at that site. There was a similar pain a coup ... Read on »
Moving from a jugular to a fistula: mixed feelings by Kamal S. Patient ExpertHealth Maven Posted Sun 06 Nov 2011 9:06pm When I was put on dialysis way back in 1997, I was given an AV Shunt. It was a small surgery, done in an Operation Theater. Dialysis was totally painless. The arterial and venous lines were connected to the two ends of the shunt and dialysis would be done. Shunts are outdated these days with the preferred mode of a temporary access for dialy ... Read on »
Fistula troubling yet again by Kamal S. Patient ExpertHealth Maven Posted Sat 24 Nov 2012 8:15pm For the last few weeks, I have been having problems with my fistula. My venous site got slightly infected and I had to abandon it and develop a new site. (I use the buttonhole technique for my cannulation which means developing a tunnel by cannulating at the same site at the same angle for 5-6 times and then using blunt needles thereafter.) The ... Fistula infected by Kamal S. Patient ExpertHealth Maven Posted Wed 28 Nov 2012 8:59pm My fistula is infected now like never before. I have been put on very strong oral antibiotics. I have also been given an intravenous dose of a vancomycin, a very potent antibiotic. I was advised to avoid dialysis yesterday to give the fistula rest for a day. In fact the nephrologist was also suggesting that I might need to skip dialysis for one ... Read on »
Fistula- To Hide, or not To Hide, THAT is the Question by Florence F. Patient Expert Posted Tue 24 Jun 2008 4:05pm 2 Comments Ahh, the fistula. My lifeline. My Saviour. My Fistula. How can a thing of such beauty be such an eye sore all at the same time? Let's face it. I'm a 20-something female who is often on the go. Like many other females (and many other people in general), I pretty big fan of wearing short sleeved shirts, tank tops, tube tops, etc. I don ... Read on »
Anal fistula by Dr. Anshu Gupta Patient Expert Posted Tue 02 Jun 2009 4:38pm What is anal fistula? Anal fistulae originate from the anal glands, which are located between the two layers of the anal sphincters and which drain into the anal canal. If the outlet of these glands becomes blocked, an abscess can form which can eventually point to the skin surface. The tract formed by this process is the fistula. Definiti ... Read on »
Fistula: Latin for “bad news” by Leanne Parrott Patient Expert Posted Wed 04 Nov 2009 10:04pm Okay, no, it doesn’t actually mean “bad news”… it means “tube”.  I had my followup today with Dr. Kaplan, and was informed that the ultrasound found a fistula in my small intestine.  A fistula is essentially an abnormal passageway that forms between two types of tissue lined with epithelium… in this case, it’s actually between two loops of bo ...
