When I was younger I remember hearing the word episiotomy in relation to childbirth but never really knew what it meant. As I got older, I heard the word less... of midwives both here in the US and in Nicaragua. She said that the practice of episiotomy in the US was almost completely extinct but that it was still commonly used in Latin America

This story of a mom whose OB cut an episiotomy after he missed the birth of the baby, saying he needed to for the placenta demonstrates the importance of Choosing your Care Provider wisely!

Is it that 2 of my friend just had episiotomies?
Is it because I don’t trust my care provider?
Is it because I saw a scary birth on TV?

Yesterday I had a prenatal visit with a client who will soon be having her second baby. One of her biggest concerns, really huge for her, is avoiding a repeat episiotomy... out, and how we will remind her care provider about her wishes as she is pushing.

are going to talk about tears and episiotomies. I know, I know - it makes my stomach flip and my PC clench.
I think the most 'catch 22' question of pregnancy is the infamous, 'would you rather tear or have an episiotomy?'. Now, any woman in her right mind would say NEITHER! And wisely so.
