Previous research has suggested a possible increased risk of breast cancer in women who started menstruating early. They believe the greater lifetime exposure to estrogen could be related to an increased risk for breast cancer. Another study has reported an increased risk of adult onset diabetes in women who started menstruating early.

This is really relevant because menstruation is one of the first parts of teaching young women about sex and sexuality

Although many women consider their period a real drag, in Ayurveda it is thought that this is one of the reasons women live longer than men.
