A recent study that has been getting a lot of press coverage asserted that happiness may be contagious. This raises the question about whether depression may have a contagious element. The authors used social network theory to show that the probability of being happy was greater when other around you are happy - and found weaker effects

Here's a news report suggesting that obesity may be "contagious". The research is not focused on obesity being contagious like a virus, but as in "socially contagious". The research suggests that obesity may be spreading due to social norms.
Specifically, the research contends that having overweight friends increases the risk of being overweight

Contagion is a very powerful phenomenon. Seems that we are hard wired to read subtle cues in others, a monkey see, monkey do kind of thing. So, it begs the question... along the way. If it's a good emotional contagion, I say ride the wave. If it's a negative one, change your environment. . . allow yourself to fall into more lighthearted
