I have a fistula in my left upper arm. I have so many people staring at it that I get a little uncomfortable at times.
Now, fistulae generally are a little gross to see. Mine has the arterial vein dilated like crazy. That makes it even worse.

For the last couple of days I have been having some pain in the venous site of my AV Fistula. I changed the location of the cannulation. I am actually at Care Hospital, waiting outside Dr. P. C. Gupta's OP room for my turn. Dr. P. C. Gupta is a vascular surgeon.

When I was put on dialysis way back in 1997, I was given an AV Shunt. It was a small surgery, done in an Operation Theater. Dialysis was totally painless. The arterial and venous lines were connected to the two ends of the shunt and dialysis would be done.

For the last few weeks, I have been having problems with my fistula. My venous site got slightly infected and I had to abandon it and develop a new site. (I use the buttonhole technique for my cannulation which means developing a tunnel by cannulating at the same site at the same angle for 5-6 times and then using blunt needles thereafter.) The ...

My fistula is infected now like never before. I have been put on very strong oral antibiotics. I have also been given an intravenous dose of a vancomycin, a very potent antibiotic. I was advised to avoid dialysis yesterday to give the fistula rest for a day. In fact the nephrologist was also suggesting that I might need to skip dialysis for one ...

We had a few alarms last night including one for the “Acid Pump Alarm” that I had not seen before, along with a few Venous Alarms. But 8 full hours so, no big complaints.
When my original Nephrologist suggested home dialysis to me, she talked about many benefits, but saving wear and tear on my fistula wasn’t one of them ...

He had looked at the results of my vein mapping, and agreed with the technician that my larger veins were in my upper left arm (not the upper right arm).
