Is it true breastfed babies do not need to be burped?

When I had my first baby, I read from somewhere that breastfed babies do not need to be burped. The theory: when a baby is fed directly from the breasts, they don’t drink in any airs, so there is no need to burp them.
Is it true?
I followed the same, coz I didn’t know how to handle a small baby at that time. Skipping the burping routine

Being a mom is not a glamorous nor mess-free job. When my son was born, we used those cute little designer burp rags.. and were fortunate that he was not a big spitter... (as Granny calls it). Voluminous and yet neutral tasting burps woke me up around 4:00AM on either Wednesday or Thursday morning. What a strange way to wake up!
