This is how we hang bananas bought green, so that they can ripen without developing soft spots from resting on a surface You will know that the banana is ripe when it starts getting spots. I’ve noticed the bananas (and mangoes) in US supermarkets are usually still quite underripe. If it’s not got a good smattering of spots, it’s not ready

they are picked: apples, cherimoyas, kiwi, mangoes, papayas, pears
· Fruits that ripen in EVERY way after picking: bananas.
Source - Jeffrey Steingarten's article on ripe fruit... don't remember the last fully ripe juicy peach I had.
The produce is being picked before it's ripe so the taste isn't there. Some fruits and veggies only ripen on the plant

How to Ripen Pears
Pears ripen when picked.
pears-picked-Conference
Pears will ripen
in the house at cool room temperature.
Traditionally, pears were put in a drawer (so dark) in a chest in the spare room - which was cool.
Winter pears, such as Anjour, Comice and Bosc require 3 or 4 weeks in the fridge after picking to ripen properly.

...and I still don't have any really cool recipes for anything with pomegranates. Does anyone know of a good pomegranate vinaigrette recipe they'd like to share?
