Vegetarians Beware of Coffee and Tea

Posted by Lela D.

According to Dr. Sears coffee and tea contain chemicals called polyphenols that can decrease the absorption of iron in plant foods by up to 70 percent. Vegetarians face the challenge of getting enough iron into their diets as is. But there's good news, you don't have to avoid your favorite beverages altogether. Just say no to coffee and tea within an hour-and-a-half of eating iron-rich foods.

I think it's the caffeine.
I was wondering if this applied to decaf coffees and teas as well. While I'm not a vegetarian I don't eat a lot of meat and depend on getting my iron elsewhere most days. I'd hate to have to ditch my coffee or tea with meals.
