Organic Wining

Posted by C.L. R.

I'm not happy about all the talk regarding organic wine. I have a friend (same friend with the organic coffee soapbox) that insists that the wine we drink has to be organic as well. Although I am a pretty healthy person, this irritates me because I know a little bit about wine and I know the wines that I like. And I'll tell you what, very few of the good wines out there with solid reputations are organic! But when I looked up information on organic wine, I learned that, starting in 2003, there was a 17% increase in those who were purchasing organic wine and they only expect those numbers to go up up up every year. This is fine, but the thing about wine is this - it takes a couple years for the wine to get good. So, if organic is suddenly sweeping the nation, does that make that bottle of wine from 82 that you've stored perfectly and properly suddenly obsolete? Cause the fact is, during the fermentation process, most of the chemicals/pesticides people are concerned about are eliminated. I'm not saying I'm not concerned about drinking pesticides - obviously I am. It's a concern for everyone. However, there comes a point where you have to do your research instead of just jump onto a bandwagon of Nothing but organic wine! On the other hand... maybe that will bring the price down on some of those older, unattainable bottles. On second thought, go ahead. Jump on the organic wine train! I've heard so much about organic wine that I did some research.

First off, I totally agree with you. Second, I had no clue any companies were selling organic wine. Personally, I try to eat organic as much as I can, but I also have limits. If you think about it, if you consume mostly organic products and drink conventional wine, you are still significantly decreasing your intake of pesticides. Either way, people can choose what they want to do, I just hope there decision is thought out and is backed by research vs. jumping on the bandwagon.
