what would cause sporadic severe itching of fingers, followed by redness, hot to touch, & swelling?

I have rheumatoid arthritis but I am not sure if my RA has anything to do with what I am experiencing. Lately my fingers start to itch without warning, I try to not scratch but it becomes so intense. As the itching continues my fingers get bright red, hot to the touch and swollen. What could be causing this?
