Hip Arthritis: An Overview

Posted Jun 28 2009 8:56pm
Arthritis is the most common reason that the hip joint wears out. Arthritis happens from chronic inflammation inside the joint, which wears out the protective cartilage around the bone. When the cartilage wears out, it weakens the area around the joint and the ligaments. As the protective cartilage is worn away, bone begins to rub on bone, which causes pain and makes it harder to move.

Hip arthritis or hip pain typically affects patients over 50 years of age. It is more common in people who are overweight, and weight loss tends to reduce the symptoms associated with hip arthritis. There is also a genetic predisposition of this condition, meaning hip arthritis tends to run in families. Other factors that can contribute to developing hip arthritis include traumatic injuries to the hip and fractures to the bone around the joint.

Hip arthritis involves any pain in or around the hip joint. Hip-related pain is not always felt directly over the hip. Instead, you may feel it in the middle of your thigh. Similarly, pain you feel in the hip may actually reflect a problem in your back, rather than your hip itself.

There are many things you can do to treat Hip arthritis caused by the joint wearing out. Usually, the doctor will try to treat  the hip pain without surgery. This is called conservative, or nonsurgical, treatment.
