Ball of foot pain

The ball of my foot is swollen and somewhat painful to touch, or when standing/walking for long periods. I can feel a hardness when I press down with my fingers. Location is between 2nd and 3rd toes--I was thinking of Mortons neuroma but the location does not match up.
I had bunion surgery 3 months ago--could this be an after effect of surgery? I do have some arthritis in the feet (and other places) but no mention of any other condition was made when I had my surgery performed.
Can you help with an answer?
