What is the maximum legal prescribed dosage for Xanax?

Posted by Liv L. Facebook

I live in Louisiana, I'm not sure if that makes any difference. I take Alprazolam 2 mg 4 times a day and need to go up to five due to my anxiety level being so high that I'm having stress seizures. I've been on this dosage for at least 3 years so my tolerance is pretty high. I heard another doctor say that 10mg a day is the legal limit so I'm not sure. Does anybody know this answer? (specific to Louisiana)

I don't know what legal limits Louisiana might place on Xanax (alprazolam) prescriptions, Liv, but you are already taking twice the medical limit of 4mg/day.

I suspect your "stress seizures" are actually being caused by the Xanax and not stress. Is Xanax being prescribed by a psychiatrist, or your family doctor? If the former, I urge you to get a second opinion from another psychiatrist, asap. If it is your doctor then you need to see a psychiatrist, also asap. Please do not up the dose until your treatment is reviewed. Even if the seizures are from stress, clearly the drug is no longer helpful and needs to be replaced by something that will work.

Best wishes

Ian
