Speech Difficulty - What do you suggest?

Posted by Misu243

Hi, I'm a college student, 22 years old, set to graduate with an undergrad degree in December. I have experienced some minor speech difficulties in the past few years. However, for some reason, they seem to be increasing rapidly this semester. I don't know if it is just a psychological problem or something like stuttering. To keep it short, I just find it very difficult to say certain words or start certain sentences. I really have the urge to say or talk with someone but I always think how I will do it. In the process of thinking, my heartbeat increases dramatically and I start to get very nervous which increases the difficulty even more. For example, just the thought of introducing myself in class gets me extremely anxious. However, when I try to say these certain words by myself, I can do it perfectly fine. Do I have a case of stuttering? I also have some difficulties on the phone. Some words that I always think that I have difficulty saying are "Credit", "Accounting", "Connecticut." However, I can say them perfectly fine to myself. Starting a sentence with "What" and similar sounds also poses a difficulty sometimes when I think too much.  I'd really appreciate some feedback and any suggestions on how I can rid myself of this fear. Also, to provide more information, I have a first cousin who has a case of stuttering. Can this be hereditary? I tried to explain my difficulty with as much detail as I could. How do you recommend I minimize this speech difficulty I have or possibly "forget" about it for good. Thanks.
