I am having sharp burning pain in breast and nipple while breast feeding. It originates from the nipple and travels back into the breast 1-2 inches and radiates out. It originates from the nipple and travels back into the breast 1-2 inches and radiates out. The pain is most intense while breastfeeding, and brings me to tears. Until this morning there were not lumps or buildup in the breast, but when I woke up this morning I was engorged. (I took a hot shower and expressed some milk and now my nipple and breast are throbbing a bit). At first the doctors office said thrush, but my baby shows no signs, then they called in something else (neither of which I've filled yet - don't want to take something until I'm sure what's going on). I know I need to continue to breastfeed but the pain is more intense than anything. I don't see any cracks and there is no blood after nursing. The pain started gradually a few days ago with occasional sharp pains in the nipple/areola area, usually shortly after nursing or right before I needed to nurse (i.e. let down but I normally don't feel that). This is my fourth child who has been nursing fine for the past 3 months, and I've never experienced anything like this before. So far no high temp, just 99.3 - 99.8. I had mastitis in the other breast the beginning of November and this isn't quite the same. HELP!
