Is it common for someone to have an anxiety attack every time they see a needle?

I have been having dental work done over the past four weeks and every time I see a needle or feel it pierce my skin I have an anxiety attack. It gets so bad that the dentist has to let me sit up to calm me down (the gas doesn’t help).
It is not at all unusual. There are some people who are so afraid of certain things they have panic attacks and some people even pass out from the fear. It is pretty common.
