I have severe anxiety and depression. My anxiety is its worst when i’m around people or public places. I think i need prescription drugs. I just bought some all natural medication but i don’t know if it’ll work. So my question is what is the best most immediate and effective anxiety relief drug out their?
I hate to say it, but there isn’t any immediate cure for depression and anxiety. In your case, it sounds like you might be suffering from social anxiety, which is treated in the same ways as depression and generalized anxiety.
Lorazepam (Ativan) is great for calming you during an episode of anxiety, but it’s also very addictive and your body tends to develop a tolerance for it over time, meaning that you have to raise the dosage level for it to have an effect. It’s also only a short-term solution. If you do take Ativan, make sure you start off with a low dose (0.5mg will do, as it’s a very strong drug) and only use it when you absolutely need it. The same goes for other sedatives, such as Valium and the like.
Antidepressants have a more long-term effect. There are too many SSRIs and SNRIs out there to name them all, but some popular brands are Prozac, Paxil and Effexor. All three carry risks, and in some cases can actually make things worse. If you get on an antidepressant, make sure to keep the doctor informed about all physical and mental effects, particularly issues with blood pressure and heart abnormalities, and suicidal thoughts or increased anxiety on the mental front. It takes one to three months for the drug to build up enough in your system to have a noticeable effect, and during this time, as well as when your doctor adjusts your medication, it’s pretty common to experience an increase in anxiety and mood swings. Antidepressants can be very effective in treating depression, but it can be difficult to find the right kind and dosage for your specific needs. It certainly won’t be an overnight cure. Stick with it until you find the right one for you — there are dozens of drugs out there, so don’t give up if the first couple have no effect.
Finally, you should try to get some counseling. Antidepressants are great for improving your overall mood, but they can only do some much. Any unresolved psychological issues will require speaking with a therapist, to help you work through them. Usually, medication combined with therapy is successful in treating or at least managing depression. I’d recommend trying the counseling on its own before you try any medications.
Go speak to your family doctor, and let him or her know how you’ve been feeling. (S)he can refer you to a therapist who can help you out. Be as honest as possible — the more they know, the better they can help you.
Good luck. I’ve dealt with depression and anxiety too, so I know how rough it is. No matter how bad you feel, always remember: This isn’t forever. With the right tools, you can beat this.
