Quite a few organic illnesses can produce the common symptoms of anxiety such as abdominal pains, constipation or diarrhea, burning or itchy skin, chest pains or tightness, numbness or tingling in the extremities, dizziness, derealization and depersonalization, flu like symptoms, insomnia, heart palpitations, muscle twitching, nausea, ringing in the ears, short term memory problems, vision problems, etc.

Some physical illness can trigger anxiety (and/or depression) including brain disease such as dementia, strokes or cancers, cardiovascular disease, endocrine (hormonal) disorders, and immune system disorders.

However, while it does happen, it is uncommon for these to be misdiagnosed as anxiety disorders, mainly because in the absence of a diagnostic test most physicians arrive at an anxiety diagnosis by ruling out organic illness first. Most of the alternatives also produce some symptoms not typical of anxiety. Plus anxiety disorders are much more common than the diseases that mimic or trigger them.
