Dementia Book Review: The Long Hello

Posted Feb 18 2011 12:00am

I'm grateful to the many readers of this blog because they often tip me off to new products or books that you may find helpful.  Here is a brief review of a new book called, The Long Hello:  The Other Side of Alzheimer's, sent to my by the author, Cathie Barrie.

Cathie lives in Canada, has law and health degrees but more importantly, is an advocate for those with Alzheimer's disease and the people who care for them.

In the last five years or so, we've seen more books come out of this type where the personal experience of caregiving for someone with dementia is documented.  Cathie cared for her mom for seven years but takes a novel approach in the way she presents their story.  The book, published in 2010 by Nightwing Press, is laid out in a conversational way with an ongoing dialogue between Cathie and her mom.  It's like listening to their intimate musings, thoughts and challenges over time.  This reader-friendly style makes it simple to jump into the book at any time in case reading it straight through is difficult due to time constraints.

The other beauty of this book is the lyrical prose that Cathie uses to tell their story.  As a dementia caregiver, you will recognize your own experiences played out on page after page.

To learn more about Cathie or to purchase her book (also in ebook or audio format), go to www.cathieborrie.com .  If you've already read the book, let us know how you liked it.
