Alzheimers Conference Paris: Field Report

Posted Nov 10 2008 4:46pm

Just finished attending and speaking at the Alzheimers Europe Conference in Paris France.   A delightful experience; in spite of some jet lag.  From having a very lively French lunch with a group from Ireland to swopping stories with the conference planners on a Seine river boat, the message is still the same:  we are all fighting the same battle against this disease no matter where we live on the earth.

Some moments:  a man from Iceland informing me that his Alz Assn has been around for 20 years and he is the lone person at the conference from his country; the group from Dublin telling me how pleased they are that their organization now has a policy officer, the physician from Greece who was excited to share interventions in long term care and of course, the delegates from France who were so pleased to use the conference as a platform for passing some new Alzheimers legislation.

This is my second international conference and each time the USA was under-represented.  This time I think I was one of two US guests, Orien Reid, President of Alzheimers Disease International being the other person from the US.  When I see the solidarity of the European countries in their fight against this disease; I come away from the event more convinced than ever of my commitment to this cause.
