The New York Yankees’ Finest Occasions T-Shirt

Posted Oct 23 2012 6:24am

A major sports apparel company has produced a t-shirt that celebrates some of the New York Yankees’ greatest moments. The list includes Lou Gehrig’s farewell speech, the start of Joe DiMaggio’s consecutive game hitting streak, Don Larsen’s perfect World Series game, the chants of U.S.A., U.S.A. after the events of September 11, 2001, and the 16 World Championships the Yankees clinched at home.

There is only one problem. The Yankees never clinched 16 World Championships at home. The Yankees Clinched Nine World Championships at Home The Yankees have won the World Series at home 9 times. In 1927 against the Pirates, in 1938 against the Cubs, in 1947 against Brooklyn, in 1950 against the Phillies, in 1951 against the Giants, in 1953 against Brooklyn, in 1977 against Los Angeles, in 1996 against the Braves, and in 1999, polo ralph lauren shirts on sale again against the Braves, the Yankees became World Champions at Yankee Stadium.

While erroneously stating that the Yankees have clinched 16 World Championships at home is a small error, it is a mistake that could have been avoided if the sports apparel company and/or Major League Baseball had been more alert. There has been a tremendous emphasis on the Yankees’ 26 World Championships, especially on the Yankees’ owned television network, and there has been a great emphasis on statistics thanks to saber metrics. Until the end of Yankee Stadium became a reality, even most rabid Yankees’ fans were unaware of where they won each of their titles.

It Doesn’t Matter Where You Win It doesn’t matter where a team wins the World Series. Some in the media, who want to create controversy, spout the nonsense that winning in the opposition’s “house” is the ultimate disgrace for one’s opponent. Lou Gehrig, Joe DiMaggio, Mickey Mantle, Jorge Posada, Derek Jeter and P ralph lauren outlet online store aul O’Neill are a small sample of winners who couldn’t care less where they won. The best example is Ernie Banks, whose team never won the World Series. Yes, it would have been nice for Ernie and millions of fans if the Cubs won a World Series at Wrigley Field, but does anyone, for one instant, believe that it mattered to Ernie where his team won the World Series?

Yankee Stadium, the Bronx, and World Championships There have been 37 World Series at Yankee Stadium. The Yankees have won 26 of them. It is one of the greatest accomplishments, if not THE greatest accomplishments in sports. The Yankees never won the World Series when they played at Hilltop Park in Manhattan from 1903-1912, at the Polo Grounds from 1913-1922, or at Shea Stadium in 1974 and 1975. They have onl ralph lauren polo shirts on sale y won when they played at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx. The Yankees will be leaving Yankee Stadium after the 2008 season, but they will still play in the Bronx. Was it Yankee Stadium, playing in the Bronx, or having great teams that would have won even if they had played in Alaska the reason the Yankees won 26 titles?

The last Yankees’ World Championship came in 2001 against the Mets. George Steinbrenner has stated repeatedly, and has been excoriated in the media repeatedly for that belief, the only successful season is one in which your team wins the World Series. Mr. Steinbrenner, of course, is correct. He doesn’t care whether they win it at home or on the road. All that matters is winning it. References: New York Yankees at Baseball-Reference
