The GFCF Review Experience: Applegate Farms Chicken Nuggets

Posted Feb 18 2010 2:00pm
If you have been watching the Winter Olympics (at least here in the United States), you have been inundated with commercials from McDonalds touting their Chicken McNuggets as the food of choice for Olympians. You know the commercials - the girls hockey team being told they will "eat like Olympians" before heading to McDonalds for their nuggets, or the guy going into the McDonalds restaurant full of Olympians so he can eat like them.

Of course, they don't mention that the 6-piece McNugget has 280 calories (160 from fat). Nor the 17g of fat (27% dv). Nor do they mention the 600 mg of sodium (25% dv).

But I digress...

None of that matters for those of us eating GFCF, because Chicken McNuggets are made with ample quantities of wheat and milk. We can't eat them anyway!

So does that mean we can't "eat like Olympians?" Of course not! We just need a better chicken nugget. And I found one that my kids really enjoyed.

We found these chicken nuggets made by Applegate Farms in our local natural foods store. Applegate Farms prides itself on making products that are organic and natural, containing only naturally derived additives and preservatives. Their product lines include processed meats like bacon or sausage, deli meats, and cheeses (non-CF), along with a small line of frozen foods, like the chicken nuggets.

The chicken nuggets themselves are made from chicken, cornstarch, salt, oregano, and water, and are coated with rice flour, tapioca dextrin, corn starch, and a blend of seasonings. The serving size (7-pieces, a little over 3 ounces) is slightly smaller than the 6-piece Chicken McNuggets (at 3.5 ounces). But for comparison, each serving of the Applegate Farms nuggets is 170 calories (80 from fat), 9g of fat (14% dv), and 350 mg sodium (15% dv).

But the proof is in the taste. And these rated thumbs up from all 4 children. The spices were not overwhelming, the breading light. all we did was pop them in the oven and flipped them over when they were halfway done. A little pricey, like most GFCF products, but as an occasional meal/treat, well worth it.

Especially if you want to give your kids the opportunity to "eat like and Olympian."
