Regarding: Codeine, Hydrocodone and Lobar

Posted by Phyllis

I have been going to the doctors since 1999 with disc problems in my back.  I allerted them that I am allegeric to Codeine.  I slipped a disc 9/1/99; went to the doctor on 9/8/99 and she started giving me medications for pain.  By 7/14/00, the pain had worsen and none of her medication prescriptions were working.  I went to her and told her that it felt like I had a growth in my spine.  She patronizingly hit my shoulder and said that it was impossible to have a growth on my spine.  I then told her that it felt like I was sitting on an egg.  She had not taken an Xray nor an MRI by that time and I demanded an Xray.  After taking it, she said it "Looked like a herniated disc".  She then ordered an MRI and referred me to another doctor to explain/consult with regarding to the MRI.  I was told that the disc (DL S1-5) was not only herniated, but was deteriorating.  I was afraid of an operation due to hearing horror stories in the waiting area, so I opted for something to kill the pain.  I was prescribed Motrin 600 mg to be taken 3 times a day.  I did so until June of 2008, when I went to my new doctor and complained of a bad stomach ache.  I found that the Motrin had given me 2 Ulcers on my stomach, a cyst on my liver and a spot on my pancreas and immediately taken off the Motrin 600 mg.

I was in so much pain that I could not taken anymore and decided to go on with the operation.  The doctor that operated on me had taken an MRI and said that the 5th disc had completely deminished and was at the base of my back.  He also said that it was affecting the 4th disc now.  He operated and removed the fragmented bones from the base of my back and install some sort of pin in place of the 5th disc.  He did nothing with the 4th disc.

During my stay in the hospital, my entire family sat there as the nurses continued to come in and take my blood pressure.  I had been taking high blood medication since 2000. This was 2008.  At any rate, no one paid attention, but me, that every time the nurse took my blood pressure, it was lower and lower.  When it got to 60/50, I started yelling for them to get my primary doctor.  When he arrived I told him about my blood pressure and he looked at the chart.  As I watched him, he crossed off something, called the nurse and had her put something in my IV to make my blood pressure go back up.  Eventually, I was well enough to go home.  He never told me what it was he changed.  But when being discharged from the hospital, the doctor that operated on my back and the primary doctor gave my son a hand full of prescriptions.  The doctor that operated on my back had given him one for Hydrocodone.  That's when I found out, because Walgreens refused to fill the order.  When my son came back and told that they couldn't fill it because I am allergic to it, I call the doctor who operated on my back.  He went ballistic, asked for Walgreens number, called them and literally cursed them out and said they didn't know what they were talking about.  He sent the prescription to a 24-hr Walgreen and told me that I HAD TO HAVE that medication.  So, thinking the doc knows best, I took it.  Within 2 days, I became weak and dizzy and nasuios.  Luckily, my 15-yr old granddaughter was there and she said my eyes were walling back into my head and I was tilting backward, ready to fall from the chair.  I wound up, right back in the hospital from taking that medication.  Since then, I was afraid to go back to that doctor, but I needed an MRI and a bi-lateral vascular test taken on my left leg.  Since the operation, I was only having problems with my left leg.  The same doctor gave me the same prescrition a third time, but this time I didn't take it.

MY QUESTION:  I just saw a doctor yesterday and he told me that Codeine could not possibly make my blood pressure go down and an strongly disagreed with him.  He said that there is no medical knowledge of such a reaction.  My question is... Can I be one out of a million people that have that reaction to codeine/hydrocodone/lobar?
